Surrounded by His Presence, Still Unchanged

There are moments in His presence that feel undeniable. The kind you don’t have to manufacture. The kind you can’t fake. The kind where something inside you knows — He is here.

The room doesn’t have to be loud. Sometimes it’s the quiet that gives it away. That awareness that you are not alone. That gentle stirring beneath the surface.

And then you feel it. Not shame or condemnation. But clarity. Like Him putting His finger on the very thing you’ve avoided surrendering.

That one place you’ve justified. Managed. Learned to work around.

And the part that's unsettling?

You can cry in worship and still refuse to change.

You can feel conviction and still walk out defending the very thing God put His finger on.

You can be inches from breakthrough…and choose familiarity instead.

And I know that’s true because I’ve done it.

I have stood in rooms where His presence was undeniable. Not emotional hype. Not manipulation. Holy. Thick. The kind that quiets you without anyone telling you to be quiet. The kind that presses against your chest and makes you aware that Heaven is near.

I have felt Him press on areas I had learned to manage instead of surrender. And I have smiled, lifted my hands, and left with those same areas intact.

Still guarded.

Still justified.

Still mine.

That’s what shook me about Mark 5. Jesus isn’t hidden in some secret prayer closet. He isn’t distant or withdrawn. He is in the middle of a crowd. Surrounded. Pressed in from every side. People are touching Him constantly.

Hands brushing His robe.

Bodies colliding with Him.

Voices calling His name.

If proximity produced power, that entire crowd would have left changed.

But they didn’t.

And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?” (Mark 5:30 NKJV)

The disciples are confused.

“You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” (Mark 5:31 NKJV)

But Jesus isn’t talking about contact.

He’s talking about connection.

In Luke, it records Jesus asking again:

But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” (Luke 8:46 NKJV)

There were dozens of hands on Him.

But only one touch carried surrender.

The crowd wanted access.

She wanted transformation.

She wasn’t there for atmosphere. She wasn’t there for inspiration. She wasn’t there to say she’d been close to Jesus.

She was desperate.

Twelve years of bleeding. Twelve years of unanswered prayers. Twelve years of being defined by what wasn’t healed.

And when she saw Him, she didn’t brush past Him.

She clung.

The word used for “touch” carries the weight of fastening yourself to something. Attaching. Clinging. Grabbing hold with intent.

The crowd grazed Him.

She fastened herself to Him.

And power responded.

And here is where it gets personal for me.

When I enter His presence, what am I actually seeking?

Comfort?

Affirmation?

A moment that makes me feel spiritual?

Or change?

Because change costs something.

Clinging requires letting go.

And sometimes I don’t want to let go.

Sometimes I want His nearness without His interruption.

Sometimes I want to feel moved without being undone.

Sometimes I want to stand in holy spaces and keep my habits, my pride, my offense, my control.

It is terrifying how easy it is to become familiar with His presence.

We can learn how to host it. How to sing in it. How to serve around it. And still resist it.

The crowd was close enough to say, “I was there.”

Only one was close enough to be different afterward.

“Who touched Me?”

I don’t believe He asked because He didn’t know.

I believe He asked because He was exposing the difference.

There is a touch that is casual.

And there is a touch that carries surrender.

There is a nearness that is familiar.

And there is a nearness that is desperate.

And familiarity can stand shoulder to shoulder with Jesus and never release what needs to die.

Desperation will crawl if it has to.

The crowd went home that day with a story.

“We were there.”

“We saw Him.”

“We touched Him.”

But only one went home different. Only one walked away restored.

And I can’t stop thinking about how terrifying it would be to stand shoulder to shoulder with Jesus…and leave unchanged.

To feel Him.

To hear Him.

To be surrounded by His presence.

And still protect the very thing He was ready to heal.

The difference was never distance.

It was surrender.

The crowd was close.

She clung.

And maybe the real question isn’t whether He is present. Maybe the question is what you will do when He presses on the place you’ve avoided surrendering.

Will you brush past Him?

Or will you fasten your faith to Him — even if it costs you your pride, your comfort, your control?

Because you can be surrounded by His presence and remain unchanged.

But you don’t have to be.

You can cling.

You can let Him undo what you’ve learned to live with.

You can walk away different.

So the next time you step into His presence — whether it’s in a crowded room or a quiet prayer space — don’t just be near Him.

Reach.

Because proximity is common.

Transformation is not.

Don’t just be surrounded. Be surrendered.
